This has not been the first time I have heard of Article of the Week (I think I have a lot of Kelly G. friends). When students are reasiboo novels, augment them with real-world texts related to the reading you are doing in class. So many of our students don't have the level of cultural literacy we would like for them to have. I am sold! This will be going oN in my class this year.

SSR: Investment or Waste of Time?
I don't have enough fingers to count the times I have heard that SSR (or whatever you want to call it) is a waste of time. Kelly points out many reasons why it isn't.

...Society's Value
"The measure of the worth of a society is how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable citizens." Theodore Sizer's quote is quite relatable. How are we treating our vulnerable students? Drill and kill? Take away time for high interest reading?

...Corrections
Peter Elbow states that we have to give our learners the experience to be simultaneously sure of of themselves and humble when they are writing, after we critique their writing. As a teacher, I want to edit my students' papers right away; correcting punctuation, spelling, paragraph structure, and then-some.
...External vs. Internal Writing
Most of our learners are writing externally and out of desperation. How can we help ourselves and our learners be internal writers? Where does your writing take place and what do you consider your writing to be external or internal and why?
...Readicide thoughts
In Kelly Gallagher's Reading Reasons, it is stated in a study that there is a strong correlation between time spent reading and higher test scores. In a study of fith graders by Anders, Wilson and Fielding, the following correlation was found that students who scored higher spent at least a half an hour reading per day. What are your thoughts about independent reading?
...Charter vs. Public School?
Have any of you ever taught in a charter/private school setting? Do your children attend a charter, private, or public school setting and why did you choose this type of setting for them? For those of you who do not have any children, when you do, what will be your preference for them to attend and why?
