Goals of YWC
Students become good writers by acting like writers—writing for extended periods, sharing with others, revising, and publishing. Our goals are for all students to gain confidence in their ability to write, complete a number of pieces of writing, and increase their repertoire of writing skills and stylistic options.
Who Are the Instructors?
Young Writers Camp teachers are exceptional K-12 teachers who are experts on teaching language, writing, and literacy. Each certificated teacher has completed a five-week Invitational Institute on teaching writing, sponsored by the South Coast Writing Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara. These educators are typically mentor teachers and district language arts coordinators with strong reputations in schools and districts throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.
History of YWC
Summer 2012 marks the 16th year for the Young Writers’ Camps, one of the most desirable summer enrichment programs in the area. Sponsored by the South Coast Writing Project (SCWriP) at UC Santa Barbara, the camps offer children entering grades 4 through 9 a unique opportunity to develop their writing talents and creative abilities. The camps are currently offered at UCSB, California Lutheran College, and Oxnard College.
