Notes from the field: A TC from our first ISI, now assistant superintendent in southern VT, contacted me and asked if I'd think with her about programs in her region. Once I cleared it with director Lisa Italiano, we began pitching various inservice models. Nancy particularly liked the program for administrators and teacher leaders. To our delight, she asked for a 4 session series rather than a one-day-long program.
As in earlier programs we'd run years ago, this is both enjoyable and useful both to the participants and to the site. We are using Because Writing Matters as our anchor text, and includ excerpts from other resources, including Because Digital Writing Matters. Of the elements in our program, most popular factors include
--Personal writing experiences (borrowing from Rosemary Cabe's practice of using compelling poetry as prompts is especially popular and evocative)
--Common Core strategies
--the opportunity to exchange ideas and become familiar with the work across district schools
--inquiry into what "the Workplace" will demand re forms of writing
--resources for classroom instruction
--ideas for writing across disciplines and digital composition
Another TC and I outlined a format for all 4 sessions but we try to be responsive to the ideas and suggestions of the group. At this point we have just finished our third session, and have begun fleshing out the final meeting in May, where we hope to collaborate on strategic planning, customizing possible programs and resources for each school. We'd appreciate any suggestions or resources for planning tools in this type of situation.
