Integrating ELA and US History in a high school?

A ELA colleague and I (a history teacher) are piloting a new course next year: American Studies (history + literature, a humanities course). We would love to know if any of you in the NWP community are teaching this kind of course and if you would share your expertise. I already use writing a lot in history, but we want to integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening about history content daily in both our classes. Any advice?

Could you clarify the grade level of the course?

Yes, of course; thanks for the reminder!

The students are high school juniors, heterogenously groups (all social classes, home languages and academic backgrounds, although AP students take a different course and aren't in this mix).

Hi Debra, I recently blogged about this project. Here's the link to the Reading Like A Historian website:  http://sheg.stanford.edu/?q=node/45
