Hammond, LA - New Orleans in Words, a radio program produced by 90.9fm KSLU, Southeastern’s public radio station, earned top honors by receiving the Award of Excellence in Sound Design during the 2012 Communicator Awards.
The program features writings from members and guests of the Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project (SLWP) set to the ambience and sounds of the Crescent City. From tugboat horns on the Mississippi signaling the break of dawn to the raucous scenes of New Orleans nightlife, New Orleans in Words chronicles a day in the life of the Big Easy as seen through the eyes of some of our area’s most talented writers. The show is the latest collaboration between KSLU and the Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project.
New Orleans in Words producer and KSLU general manager Todd Delaney says, “This is our 5th project with the SLWP and I think it’s one of our best so far. It’s a great honor to have an international awards organization recognize the merits of Louisiana writers and the quality of the radio programs we produce at Southeastern.”
Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project Director, Dr. Richard Louth, says, “It’s great to see this writing being made public through radio and to work with KSLU. All of the pieces on this program were written byarea writing teachers participating in SLWP’s annual New Orleans Writing Marathon, a three-day summer event where writers fan out across New Orleans to capture their experiences. This Writing Marathon concept was started right here at SLU and has been a model for National Writing Project sites across the country.” Louth adds, “Anyone who’d like to read these pieces or others like them can find them in two recent publications: The Writing Marathon: In Good Company Revealed (Lulu.com, 2011) and “New Orleans in Words,” in the Spring 2011 issue of Louisiana Literature.
