Academic Success Tied To Embracing Culture, Language in Mexican Americans

A new research report from the University of Missouri unveils new implications for English language development programs. According to doctoral candidate David Aguayo, "if we don’t accept the cultural identity of these students in our schools, such as tolerating their native language, Mexican-Americans may not succeed." Aguayo surveyed 400 immigrant students, some who spoke their native language and embraced Mexican culture, and others who were placed in English-only environments and embraced mainstream US culture.
